This is a comprehensive study on "divorce" from Mat 5:31-32 the study passage and its root passages Deuteronomy 24. We also looked at Exod 21, Malachi 2 from the OT and Mark 10, Matt 19, 1 Cor 7 from the NT. Contextual Rabbinic traditions from Shammai, Hillel and Aquiba were explored. "The Husband's law of divorce" (Immorality - Deut 24) and "the Wife's law of divorce (Neglect - Exod 21) were explained. Jesus' 'exception' clause needs to be understood not as an 'exclusive' clause for divorce, but as an exceptional clause, to condemn 'sexual Immorality' that was rampant among men at a physical level, leave alone at the thought level (mental adultery) that Jesus called attention to, exposing their hypocrisy! If Jesus' law against lust (mental adultery) were to be taken seriously as grounds for divorce, almost every wife will have reasons everyday to divorce their husbands! That is the weight and gravitas of what Jesus meant, in a society that was sending away wives with certificates of divorce, to remarry (other attractive women, like Rabbi Aquiba favoured!) Jesus on divorce (Mat 5:31-32)
Jesus challenges the misreading/misinterpretation of the 7th command, here. He's bringing the right focus of God's intent in giving this law. Mere external conduct, lacking internal character is what he challenges. He's rooting for true righteousness, challenging Pharisaic legalistic pseudo-righteousness (external) and speaking of purity in the inmost being. He highlights through amplified language the weight and the gravity of sin and the radical and ruthless way with which we need to deal with it! Jesus: On lust (G.i.g.s. 31, Matt 5:27-30)
Jesus is going against the theological grain of his day and shattering the Pharisaic and scribal interpretations of the Mosaic law. He's teaching his audience, "why they (we) ought not to do, what we're told not to do" The 'whys' behind the 'do's and don'ts' are so crucial in ethics and morals and Jesus is pointing to the higher intent of God's moral prescriptions - than mere external 'do's and don'ts'! The 'spirit of the law' versus 'the letter of the law'! Here, he takes - anger, hatred, violence, murder to it's deepest roots and asks his hearers to do the nearly impossible - forgiveness, reconciliation, reparation, peacemaking. Let's realize our spiritual poverty and seeks God's enabling to do the seemingly impossible - bridling our negative emotional (here, anger), in the midst of everyday circumstances that constantly drive us to the edge, perhaps. May the Peace of God that transcends all understanding be ours, as we endeavour and attempt baby steps to honour him in every area of our lives 🙏 . . . . Beatitudes 5 to 8 are attitudes and distinctive that define a Christian after he/she experiences Jesus Christ. These are counter-cultural, counter-intuitive, cos the Messiah and the mission he unfurled are counter-intuitive and counter-cultural. These are kingdom principles that are generic, and sure there may be exceptions to these. Jesus' disciples ~ 1.0 (G.i.g.s 24)
Jesus' healing in this narrative was controversial - he healed on the 'Sabbath'. Pharisaic sabbath laws permitted 'critical care, child birth and circumcision' but not healing a palsied hand! Jesus heals this man, by his word on the sabbath - pointers to equating himself with the divine. The Pharisees, in upholding the letter of the law, missed the crux of it, which was tending to human need (rest, restoration, reset) and took issue with Jesus' apparent violation of it.
